Dear Buntary
It has been brought to my notice that there is a strong feeling of resentment among the British residents in Hong Kong that the Government are not prepared to reimburse those who sustained loss or damage as a result of the war although a grant of £250,000 is being made to the Hong Kong University. Whilst to my mind there is no comparison between two such expenditures
cannot help but realise that this might well be the attitude adopted by those who have lost their homes and are unable to rebuild them through lack of sufficient resources.
From what I am told it seems that those employed in industry and commerce are doing so well that they are in no need of financial help to rehabilitate themselves but it is the people in the professional services, whose incomes are not increased by the present conditions in the Island, who are suffering from the damage done to their homes and property.
I should be grateful if you would look into this matter and advise me whether anything is being done or contemplated to assist those British people who are suffering hardship as a result of the war or if claims can be made upon one of the Government's grants to the Colony by these people.
You
The Rt. Hon. A. Creech Jones, M.P.,
